About this download

This utility is only for use with the products identified and sold in Asia Pacific. Not all models are sold in all countries.
This utility updates BDP-S4200/S5200 firmware to version M20.R.0164 and provides the following benefits:

  • Resolves SSL security issue.
  • BRAVIA Internet Video improvement.

Check the Current Firmware Version

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc player is connected.
  2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
  3. If the Blu-ray Disc player starts to play a disc, press the "STOP" button and wait until the xross media bar™ menu is displayed on the television before proceeding.
  4. Use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" - "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select "System Information", and then press the ENTER button.
  6. The firmware version currently installed on the Blu-ray Disc player will be listed on the television screen.

    If the last four digits of the version number are 0164 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware update.

How to Get the Firmware update
There are two ways to perform the BDP-S4200/S5200 Firmware update:

Update via Internet:

  • The Update via Internet operation is straightforward. Sony highly recommends that you use the Update via Internet method.
  • You will need to connect the Blu-ray Disc player to your Internet source.(using Ethernet cable or Wireless connection)
  • It is recommended to have network speed above than 512Kbps to use Update via Internet to avoid slow firmware update process.
  • Please see the Update via Internet Instructions section below, for more information.

Update via USB Memory:

  • If you cannot connect the Blu-ray Disc player to your Internet source, please use the USB update method.
  • Please see the Download and Transfer the Update File to Your USB Storage Device section below, for more information.
Update via Internet Operations
The Update via Internet operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network Update method to update the BDP-S4200/S5200 firmware.
Important Notes
  • WARNING!! Please follow the update instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the update process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • WARNING!! Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware update may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • In order to use this update method it is necessary to have the player correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
  • In order to perform the firmware update, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible television.

Update via Internet Instructions
Note: The firmware update process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc player is connected.
  2. Make sure the Blu-ray player is connected to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable or wireless router.
  3. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
  4. If there is a disc in the player, please remove the disc.
  5. At the xross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" - " Software Update" and then select “Update via Internet”.
  6. New Software Version available message will be prompted. Select “OK” to proceed for Update via Internet.
  7. The message "Update to a new software version" and the latest software version is displayed on the television.
  8. Select "Start" and then press the ENTER button.
  9. The first portion of the update process starts.
  10. During the update the progress bar "x %" and the download capacity are displayed on the television.
    Note: The "x" changes to "0" through "100", indicating the update progress.
  11. The Blu-ray Disc player will restart itself when the first portion is completed and the second portion of the update will start.

  13. Once the firmware update is complete, it will automatically power off.
    WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the player until the update is complete. Doing so may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  14. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
  15. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the update has successfully installed.
    Note: If the last four digits of the version number are 0164, the firmware update was successful.

Update via Internet FAQ

  1. When running network update, the television displays the message, “Connection status cannot be confirmed” or “This device is not connected to network” and you cannot perform the firmware update.
    There may be a problem with the network connection. Verify that the network connection and settings are correct.
    • For wired connection, check the Ethernet cable to make sure it is securely connected to the LAN (100) terminal on the unit and to the Internet source.
    • Or for wireless connection, check the wireless router is powered on and connected to Internet source.
    • Check the Blu-ray Disc player network settings and confirm that the player has its own IP address.
      Note: If you use a proxy server, enter the IP address of the proxy server you use, instead of the proxy host name, in the Proxy Server input field.
    • Confirm both 'Physical Connection' and 'Internet Access' is OK in Network Settings - Network Connection Status.
    • Follow the Update via Internet instructions again.
  2. The power was shut down during the update process.
    Power on the Blu-ray Disc player and try the network update process again.

  3. The firmware update process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minute 
    The recommended network speed to perform Update via Internet is 512Kbps and above.
    If firmware update process is still not finished, please cancel the process and retry with Update via USB Memory. If firmware update still failed, please contact Sony.

  4. While updating the firmware, Update failed screen appears.
    Please perform the following procedure:
    • Ensure there is no problem with your network connection to the Internet.
    • At the update failed screen, select OK to try the network update again or select. Cancel to cancel the network update process.
    • If the symptom does not improve after trying the Update via Internet again, please download the firmware from the web and perform Download for Update via USB Memory.
    • Cancel the Update via Internet process and proceed with Download for Update via USB Memory.
  5. The firmware update continues to fail after multiple tries.
    Please download the firmware from the web and performedDownload for Update via USB Memory.
    If the problem still persists, please contact Sony.

Download for Update via USB Memory
If you cannot connect the BDP-S4200/S5200 to your Internet source, please use the update via USB method.
Important Notes:

  • If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware update is needed for your Blu-ray Disc player.
  • WARNING!! Please follow the update instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the update process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.

  • Recommended operating system for the computer that will download the firmware update:
    - Macintosh® OS version 10.5 or later version
    - Microsoft® Windows® 8, Microsoft® Windows® 7, Microsoft® Windows® Vista®, Microsoft® Windows® XP
  • In order to perform the firmware update, it is necessary to have the player correctly connected to a compatible television.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download for Update via USB Memory Instructions

  1. Download the UPDATE_M20R0164.ZIP file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).

  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the UPDATE_M20R0164.ZIP file is 96,836,773 bytes.
    1. Right-click the UPDATE_M20R0164.ZIP file, and click "Properties".
    2. On the "UPDATE_M20R0164.ZIP Properties" screen, verify that the "Size:" listed is "92.3MB (96,836,773 bytes)".
      Note: The "Size on disk:" listed may be different. That is normal.
    3. If the file size is different than the "96,836,773 bytes", please download the UPDATE_M20R0164.ZIP file again.
  3. Extract the update file from the UPDATE_M20R0164.ZIP file.

    For Mac OS® X operating system:
    1. Go to the location where the file was downloaded and double-click the UPDATE_M20R0164.ZIP file.
    2. A new folder will be created called "UPDATE ".
    For Microsoft® Windows® Vista®, Windows® 7 or Windows® 8 operating system:
    1. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the UPDATE_M20R0164.ZIP file, and then click "Extract All”
    2. At the "Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders" window, click "Extract"
    3. A new folder will be created called " UPDATE "
    For Windows® XP operating system:
    1. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the UPDATE_M20R0164.ZIP file, and then click "Extract All”
    2. At the "Extraction Wizard" dialog box, click "Next".
    3. Click "Next".
    4. Click "Finish".
    5. A new folder will be created called "UPDATE"
      Note: Make sure all four files is included inside “UPDATE” folder: 
      MSB20-FW.BIN and MSB20-FW.ID, MSB20-FW_MB.BIN, and MSB20-FW_MB.ID
  4. Connect a compatible USB storage device to your computer.
    View formatting instructions and the list of compatible USB storage devices.
    Note: BDP support FAT32 and NTFS
  5. Transfer the update folder to the USB storage device:

    For Mac OS® X operating system: 
    Drag and drop “UPDATE” folder to the root folder of the USB device.

    For Windows® operating system:
    1. Go to the directory where the folder was created,
    2. Right-click the UPDATE folder and, from the menu,
    3. Click "Send To...", and then click the drive (EX: Removable Disk E:) that represents your USB device.
    4. The update folder will be copied onto your USB device.
      Note: The update will not be performed if the file is not copied to the root directory of the USB device or if the name of the file is modified.
  6. Remove the USB device from your computer.
  7. Please continue to the next section.

Update via USB Instructions
The instructions below are for how to install the firmware update using a USB device.
Firmware update Instructions

  • WARNING!! Do not power off the player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the player to the point of requiring repair.
  • WARNING!! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the update is complete. Doing so may damage the player to the point of requiring repair.
    Note: The firmware update process takes up to 5 minutes to complete. During the update process, the screen on your television will display progress information, or may be blank. This is normal. 
  • Please do not remove the USB storage device until the update is complete.
  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc player is connected.
  2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
  3. Make sure no other USB devices are connected to Blu-ray Disc player, if there are, please unplug it from Blu-ray Disc Player.
  4. Insert the USB storage device containing the update file into USB port located on the front panel of the player.
  5. At the xross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" - "Software Update" and then press the ENTER button.
  6. Software Update confirmation will be displayed. Select “Update via USB Memory”. Press “OK” to perform Update via USB Memory.
  7. The message "Update to a new software version" is prompted and the latest software version is displayed on the television.
  8. Select "OK" and then press the ENTER button.
  9. The first portion of the update process starts.
  10. During the update the progress bar “x %” is displayed on the television.
    Note: The “x” changes to “0” through “100”, indicating the update progress.
  11. The Blu-ray Disc player will restart itself when the first portion has completed and the second portion of the update will start.
  12. The progress bar "x %" is displayed again on the television.

  13. Once the firmware update is complete, the player will automatically power off.
    WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the player until the update is complete. Doing so may result in your player being unresponsive and requiring repair.
  14. Remove the USB device from the player.
  15. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
  16. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the update has been successfully installed.

    Note: If the last four digits of the version number are 0164, the firmware update was successful.

Update via USB Memory FAQ

  1. Unable to select “Update via USB Memory”
    Please make sure following:-
    -USB device is properly connected to Blu-ray Disc player
    -USB device is formatted to supported File System (FAT32 & NTFS)
    -USB devices is compatible with Blu-ray Disc player
    If problem still persist, please contact Sony

  2. Caution message “There is no update file” is displayed.
    Please make sure the update folder name is correctly named (“UPDATE” – with all capital letter) and all the files are included inside “UPDATE” folder:-
    - MSBXX-FW.BIN
    - MSBXX-FW.ID
    - MSBXX-FW_MB.BIN
    - MSBXX-FW_MB.ID
    Please follow the steps in the Download for Update via USB Memory.
    If problem still persist, please contact Sony

  3. Caution message “The file is corrupted” is displayed.
    Please download the UPDATE_M20R0164.ZIP again and follow the steps in the Download for Update via USB Memory.
    If problem still persist, please contact Sony

  4. The power was shut down during the update process.
    Power on the Blu-ray Disc player and try the update process again.

  5. The UPDATE_M20R0164.ZIP update file I downloaded from the update web site cannot be extracted.
    The download may have failed. Delete the downloaded file and follow the steps in the Download for Update via USB Memory.

  6. The firmware update process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes.
