Focus on the Little Things
Lauryn Ishak x FE 35mm F1.4 GM
To me, photography is about the journey, the memories and being able to go back to those moments. A good photograph affects the audience and the photographer—it should evoke a response from both.
When I’m on the go, I prefer to carry as light a kit as possible. The FE 35mm F1.4 GM has surprisingly light build. It’s compact and feels good in the hands. I find myself taking it wherever I go because it fits into a smaller bag. I’m able to go on longer shoots which gives me the freedom to explore as much as I like.

And as a 35mm, it’s also an extremely flexible lens. I’m able to photograph a wide variety of subjects—everything from environmental and landscapes to portraits and products. It’s nice to know that I can just bring one lens around to capture whatever catches my eye.

The FE 35mm F1.4 GM’s autofocus is incredibly fast and super sharp. The lens performs superbly even in the most unexpected situations. It’s able to react quickly and capture the action as it happens.

The lens is really well built with very high quality glass and has some really nice bokeh. It keeps my subjects sharp while still giving me a nice blurry background with some round, creamy bokeh without any unpleasant onion rings or purple fringing. It’s smooth and subtle and really separates my subject from the environment. It draws attention to my subject while still letting me capture enough of the scene to give context to the moment.

Normally I shoot with a wide range of lenses, including a 50mm. But with the 35mm, it’s made me approach things differently. It’s really inspired me to look at everyday things in a new light, especially when I’m just walking around and observing the people and places around me.
With this focal length, I’m able to get a lot in a closer shot so it’s easy to create a story within a frame. The lens has a short minimum focusing distance so I’m able to go up close to my subject and still get all the details clearly. Or I can step back, capture a wider scene and still get sharp corner-to-corner resolution.

And with the F1.4 aperture, I’m able to shoot in lowlight and still get crystal clear images.

35mm really suits the way I work and has inspired me to go out and take photos every day. I know I can trust it to capture extremely high quality images so I can focus on the little things that make a great story.
