About this download

This program updates the DSLR-A700 camera firmware to Version 4.

Firmware Update AdditionalFeatures / Improvements

  1. Add the choice of “2 steps/ 3 shots” to auto exposure bracketing (single and continuous)
  2. Add the choice of Off to the High ISO NR feature
  3. Improvement of the image quality in high ISO setting
  4. Improvement of the performance of the auto white balance and the D-Range Optimizer
  5. Improvement of reliability for communication between camera body and vertical grip when attaching the vertical grip

IMPORTANT: This firmware update is only for a DSLR-A700 camera that has Ver.1, Ver.2 or Ver.3 of the firmware installed.

Determine whether or not this firmware update is needed:

Only DSLR-A700 cameras that meet the criteria for the current firmware version should proceed with this firmware update. Follow these steps to check your firmware version.

Note: If the firmware version is already Ver.4, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

  1. Slide the POWER switch to the ON position.
  2. Press the MENU Button, then LCD monitor displays menu.
  3. Press DISP button while menu is indicated.
  4. A window will show the firmware version on LCD monitor.
  5. Press the Center button of Multi-selector to close the version display.


IMPORTANT NOTES: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.

WARNING:

  1. Do not use this firmware to update any other models of digital cameras.
  2. This Camera firmware update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous firmware version after updating this firmware. By continuing this update process, downloading and updating this firmware, acknowledgement of awareness and understanding that this update cannot reverse this installation.

Note:

  • It is highly recommended to print out these instructions as a reference during the installation process.
  • Please contact your local Sony office, if you encounter any problem while performing the firmware update

  • You cannot connect the camera to the computer with the USB cable.
  • Your computer should have a card slot, or a card reader which is suitable for the recording medium.

Operating conditions

  • The computer should be equipped with a USB port, or a card slot which is suitable for a recording medium to use.
  • Available hard disk space should be 5MB or more. 
  • RAM should be 32MB or more.

Please be sure to prepare the following items as it will be used while updating.

POWER source (for the camera) 

  • When performing the firmware update, use the fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FM500H or the AC-VQ900AM AC adapter/charger (sold separately).

USB cable 

  • USB cable supplied with camera  

    * Operations are not guaranteed if you use a commercially available USB cable.

Recording medium

Please prepare a recording medium from the following.

  • Memory Stick Duo/Memory Stick PRO Duo/Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo with capacity of 16MB or more 
    * Those will be generally called "Memory Stick Duo" in the following pages.
  • CF (CompactFlash) card with capacity of 16MB or more
  • Microdrive  

Recording medium is required to be formatted with the camera beforehand. Please backup the data in the medium before format.

Note:
  • Please download the firmware update file from the SONY Website of the country where you purchased the camera.
  • NOTE: This download is meant only for DSLR-A700 camera purchased in Asia Pacific region

Download and extraction procedures

  1. Double-click the downloaded file DSCA700v04.exe to extract it.
    * Depending on your Operating System, the file may be automatically extracted when downloading.

  2. After extraction, the following file is created.
      - DSCA700.APP [ File size : 4,719,092 bytes ]
     * The extensions may not be displayed depending on the computer.

Prepare the recording medium

Prepare the recording medium (Memory Stick Duo / CF card / Microdrive) to use for the update, then format it with the camera.

Note:

  • If the recording medium  is not formatted, the firmware update may not start.
  • Please note that all data including even protected images will be erased by formatting and cannot be restored. 

Format the recording medium

  1. Slide the POWER switch to the ON position.

  2. Press the MENU button, and check the "Memory card" to the proper type you use for update (Memory Stick Duo / CF card / Microdrive) in the Setup menu-2.


  3. Select the Format in the Playback menu-1 with the Multi-selector then press the Center button of the Multi-selector.


  4. The confirmation window appears. Select OK with multi-selector, then press the Center button of the Multi-selector.

  5. After the format is completed, press the MENU button to turn off the menu.

Copy the update files to the recording medium

Copy the update files to the recording medium (Memory Stick Duo / CF card / Microdrive) with one of the procedures below depending on your environment.

If your computer has a card slot which is suitable for the recording medium

  1. Insert the recording medium formatted with the camera in the card slot of your computer.

  2. Copy the update files DSCA700.APP to the root folder of the recording medium.

If your computer does not have a card slot which is suitable for the recording medium

The camera is connected with the computer with the USB cable, and the update file is copied onto the recording medium.

  1. Insert a formatted recording medium in the camera.

  2. Insert a fully charged battery (NP-FM500H) in the camera, or connect the AC Adaptor to the camera.

  3. Slide the POWER switch to the On position.

  4. Press the MENU button and select the Setup menu-2 with the Multi-selector.
  5. Please check that Mass Storage was chosen in USB connection of Setup menu. If it was not chosen, please set to Mass Storage.

    How to set the USB connection

    1. Select the USB connection with the Multi-selector.
    2. Press the Center button of the Multi-selector to display the options of USB connection.
    3. Select the "Mass Storage" with the Multi-selector then press the Center button of the Multi-selector.

  6. Press the MENU button to turn off the menu.
  7. Connect the camera and the computer with the USB cable.
  8. Copy the update file DSCA700.APP to the root folder of the recording medium inserted in the camera.
  9. When copying is finished, disconnect the USB cable.


Update the firmware

Note:  

  • When performing the firmware update, use fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FM500H or the AC adapter AC-VQ900AM AC adapter/charger (sold separately).
  • Do not remove the battery or AC adapter during the firmware update, otherwise the camera may be permanently damaged.

Before the update, please check the Memory card setting.

  1. Slide the POWER switch to ON position
  2. Press the MENU button, and check the "Memory card" to the proper type you use for update (Memory Stick Duo / CF card / Microdrive) in the Setup menu-2.
      If the setting of “Memory card" is different, please set it to right.


  3. Press the MENU button to turn off the menu, then slide the POWER switch to OFF position.

Update the Firmware

  1. Insert the prepared recording medium (Memory Stick Duo / CF card / Microdrive) in the camera, then slide the POWER switch to ON position while MENU button is pressed.


  2. The confirmation window appears.
    Note: If the confirmation window does not appear on the LCD monitor:
    *If the recording medium is not formatted, the firmware update may not start.
    *Please make sure that the update file (DSCA700.APP) is in the root folder of the recording medium.



  3. Use the Multi-selector to highlight OK, then press the Center button of Multi-selector.

  4. Updating procedure starts.


  5. When the “Update is completed.” message appears, the camera automatically restarts after approximately 10 sec. Please wait for the camera to restart.


  6. After camera restarted, Turn the camera off, then remove the recording medium.

Check the camera firmware version after updating

  1. Slide the POWER switch to ON position.

  2. Press the MENU button, then LCD monitor displays menu.
  3. Press the DISP (Display) button while menu is indicated.
  4. A window will show the firmware version on LCD monitor. Check the version number has changed to "Ver.4 ".

  5. Press the Center button of Multi-selector to close the version number display.

Note:

  • If updating procedure was not completed successfully or the camera cannot turn on, please consult your local authorized Sony service facility.

  • After updating the camera, format the recording medium or delete the update file DSCA700.APP from the recording medium.
